Welcome to Year 3 and the start of a wonderful year. Your teachers are really happy to have you in our classes this year and we know how amazing you will all be! We have got lots of exciting learning, trips and experiences planned throughout the year and can’t wait to share them with you.

This term's topic will be Stone Age.

During this unit of work, the children will be learning about what life was like during the Stone Age. The children will learn about different aspects of daily life in the Stone Age such as hunting and gathering food, how clothes were made and different types of Stone Age dwellings. We will be focusing on chronological order of historical time periods and comparing life in the Stone Age to modern day.

This half term in Science, we will be focusing on rocks. We will be learning about different rocks, and looking at the structure and properties of these rocks. We will also be linking this to fossils and their discovery.

Food technology takes centre stage in design technology. We will be designing, making and evaluating our own healthy, vegetable soup/broth using ingredients similar to that in the Stone Age.

English Focus

After really enjoying last term’s text, we will be starting a brand-new book in Year 3! This time we will be enjoying ‘Stone Age Boy’ and ‘The Stolen Spear’.

A helpful strategy to use when readers get to a tricky word is ‘pause, prompt, praise’:

  • pause to let your child work out the word
  • prompt them if they need help by giving them a clue or if they are really stuck tell them the answer;
  • praise them when they concentrate and get the right word.

Writing Focus

We will be planning and writing adventure stories, inspired by Stone Age Boy. We will be focusing on using direct speech in our writing and extending sentences with a range of conjunctions.

We’ll follow that by writing instructions based on the book ‘How to wash a woolly mammoth’.

Maths Focus

In Maths, we will be learning how to multiply two digits by one digit, using the formal written method. We will then look at using the formal method, also known as the ‘bus stop method’ to divide.

During these units, children will get the chance to build on their understanding of place value and addition and subtraction from the Autumn term.

Did you know you don’t need to be an expert in maths to help with your child’s numeracy?

Support your child’s maths skills by taking them shopping and getting them to talk about the quantities of what you are buying.
