Religious Education
Vision and intent for RE
Our R.E. curriculum is designed to develop compassionate individuals who think and act with respect, and with understanding of the views of others, including an understanding of the beliefs and practices of religions and other world views.
R.E lessons provide opportunities for children to gain a greater understanding of the identity and diversity of their local community. Within a respectful and nurturing environment, children are actively encouraged to discuss and respect the differences between people, such as differences of faith, ethnicity, disability, gender or sexuality and differences of family situations.
The RE curriculum underpins pupils spiritual, emotional and moral development, enabling pupils to better understand themselves and others and to cope with the opportunities, challenges and responsibilities of living in a rapidly changing, multicultural world. Our curriculum gives children the opportunity to reflect upon and discuss their own views whilst investigating the beliefs and practices of others. Children are challenged to consider difficult ethical and moral questions such as the meaning, purpose and value of life. During their time at Hollybush Primary School, children will develop their religious literacy and learn how to have respectful, restorative and positive interactions with others. We aim to equip all our young people with these essential skills for adult life and lifelong learning so they will leave us with high aspirations to live and work as active, purposeful citizens of Leeds alongside people of all beliefs and cultures. We are committed to narrowing the attainment gap for disadvantaged and pupil premium children through quality first teaching and opportunities to broaden personal development, and spiritual, moral and cultural development.
RE at Hollybush
At Hollybush we follow the Leeds Agreed syllabus 2024-29 Belonging and Believing. This informs our school wide curriculum.
As a non-faith school, we feel it is important that in order to grow as respectful and global citizens children must have a strong foundation of well-developed understanding of a range of religious and world views, as well as an understanding of the makeup of our local community.
At Hollybush the teaching of RE will:
- Enable pupils to develop a broad and balanced understanding of religions and world views.
- Develop critical thinking skills - asking questions, challenging stereotypes and division.
- Develop and understanding of ethics and morality.
- Broaden children's perspectives of faiths and cultures - encouraging mutual respect.
- Support children to be active citizens of the world - actively learning from other through shared experiences and the experiences of others.
